Changes in healthcare are continuing in ways that many are unaware of. One of the most significant of these emerging trends is the increasing number of women providing clinical care in settings varying from Emergency Rooms to Outpatient Clinics to Surgical Centers. In 2006-2007, women received 49.1% of the MDs awarded, the largest proportion of any national medical school graduating class in history. That trend is continuing with women now dominating several specialties that were once almost the exclusive domain of men. In addition, Physician Assistants (PAs) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs), the majority of which are women, are two of the fastest growing sectors within the medical profession.
This increase in the number of women providing clinical care to patients has recently been recognized by some medical uniform suppliers.

Traditionally, the style of lab coats and scrubs worn by clinicians - those licensed to write prescriptions such as MDs, PAs, and NPs - have helped to define their position within the medical hierarchy. The so called unisex style was adequate for men’s bodies, and during a period when men overwhelmingly dominated the field of clinical medicine, the need for clinician lab coats and scrubs for women was apparently deemed insufficient to warrant a separate design.
But with the proportion of female clinicians increasing so significantly, uniform trends are changing.
